What is a Wallet?

A Blockchain or Cryptocurrency Wallet is a file which stores a Public Key and Private Key.

These Keys are needed to validate a Digital Signature on a Blockchain network in order to deem a transaction valid.

A Wallet authorizes a user to send and receive a cryptocurrency or token on a given Blockchain network.

Types of Wallet

Paper Wallet (Offline)

  • Public and private keys are downloaded and printed on paper or similar
  • Keys can be stored in QR code form for ease of transfer.

  • The advantage of this is that keys are not stored on network-connected devices, making Paper Wallets immune to hacks.

Hardware Wallet (Offline):

  • Public and private keys are stored on a hardware device.

  • Private keys are protected by a microcontroller that ensures that the private key cannot be transferred out of the device in plaintext, making it spyware proof.

  • Hardware wallets can have added layers of security such as pin-codes, security cards, Biometric authenticators, or even inbuilt security protocol such as Hierarchical Deterministic Wallet Protocol (BIP44)


Soft Wallet (Offline/Online):
  • Public and private keys are downloaded and kept in the computer’s hard drive.

  • Allows for transfer of funds, accessible by wallet holder alone.

  • Frees the user of the risk of concentrated attacks such as against a large exchange with a large number of funds.

 3rd Party Wallet (Online):

  • Online wallets service hold the private keys on a centralized server or cloud server controlled by a wallet company.

  • This allows for enhanced utilities such as linking desktop, web and mobile wallets and remote access.

  •  Online wallets allow for the integration of 2FA, fingerprint sensors and face recognition which add security at the user level.
